One of the most important things you can do is track your clients and/or contacts. There are about as many programs out there today which supposedly help one to do this as there are people to track. ACT!, Outlook, Goldmine, Salesforce.com. These are just a few.
One of my personal favorites, lately, is one called Highrise HQ, by a company called 37 Signals.
This kind of program is what is known as a CRM or Customer Relationship Management program.
Highrise is perfect for people who don't want to get mired down into 1,000 different program features. It is incredibly simple in its construction. You'll only have to learn about 5 key things (tagging, how to import contacts, how to get emails you send contacts attached to their Highrise record, setting tasks for follow-up, etc.)
A few bullet points on what makes Highrise unique (aside from its basic simplicty):
- You can collaborate on contacts with others by giving them an account. So they see the same info as you do and can work with you on sales as needed.
- It' entirely web-based. Access the data from any web browser
- You can use "tags" (key words) to track your pipeline in any way you can possibly imaging. So no onerous, pre-determined structure to learn.
Highrise offers a free 30 day trial. You can give it a run before you decide whether to use it.
