Pretty excited. Yesterday I was getting back into my exercise routine after an unintended hiatus. Our present lifestyle (read: number of small children) doesn't always allow for early-morning workouts, but things were settling down after some late nights with the boys, so I took the opportunity to get back to my yoga.
About three quarters of the way through the Ashtanga yoga routine I do, there is a pose called Prasarita Padottanasana C [picture]. I can't get into the depth of position you'll see on that picture, but I've been making some really good progress toward loosening up my arms and shoulders, and even my hamstrings.
Well today was certainly no exception. I got my arms locked into position and brought them over the back of my head and then heard an audible "POP!" sound.
It felt like I had just pulled or detached something, but there was no pain. It was more like something rusted stuck had broken free finally, right at the top of my deltoid region (top shoulder). Feeling around today, it's a bit sore, but the range of motion in my shoulder is about 40% better than it was. Also, the rotator cuff inflammation seems to be greatly reduced.
One sure test of progress here, was whether I could get to the back of my golf swing without a lot of pain. I could! Alert the media!
I think I just freed up something in a major way in this area. I'm hoping my right shoulder does the same soon and will be increasing my yoga workout frequency a bit to see if that helps that along. My right shoulder has been more trouble than the left.
It is noteworthy that after two years of yoga, this happened around the same time I started doing a rotator cuff stretch out of this book.
Just thought I'd pass this on in case there are any others out there who are having shoulder problems and might like to know what they could do about it.
